Men produce semen which is a flued that contains sperms and some chemicals for lubrication etc. Either the penis is inserted in women's vagina so that sperms will have to swim very little to reach ovum and fuse with that. Otherwise if semen of a man is just put on the opening of vagina. Sperms can still reach ovum or egg to fuse and as a result make the women pregnant.

If you're talking about artificial insemination then it's really easy.put the collected sperm inside the vagina and wait. You will know if it's worked when the next period is due.
