North Staffordshire is a district in the county of Staffordshire in England. It is one part of two separate districts that are usually considered to be one by visitors. The other district is called the Staffordshire Midlands. North Staffordshire is known for its pottery and coal mining industries. Coal mining, which was earlier a thriving industry and one of the biggest employers in North Staffordshire, has now practically ceased. Pottery, on the other hand, can no longer be considered as the occupation that once was an environmental hazard (the kilns in Stoke-on-Trent which were used to make the pots were once infamous for producing a lot of smoke).
The county of North Staffordshire comprises the market towns of Newcastle-under-Lyme, Stone and Eccleshall. On the border between North Staffordshire and Shropshire is the home of gingerbread, Market Drayton. Alton Towers, Britain's largest amusement park, is located in the county of North Staffordshire.
