The largest helicopter in the world is the Russian made Mil Mi-26 which is used both for military as well as civilian purposes. The helicopter is 40 meters (131 ft) in length; its height is 8 meters (about 27 ft). The maiden flight of the Mil Mi-26 took place on December 14, 1977 and was incorporated in the military in 1983. The Mil Mi-26 weighs 28,200 kg (62,170 lbs) and can carry a load of 20 tons or 20,000 kg (44,000 lbs).

The Mil Mi-26 is one of the first helicopters with an 8 blade rotor; it has a speed of 295 km/hr. At present it is mainly used to transport troops and military equipment and civil cargo. The helicopter has had a relatively accident free history. The only major mishap it was involved in was when on August 19, 2002 Chechen rebels shot down a Mil Mi-26 carrying Russian troops using a surface to air missile which resulted in the death of 127 soldiers.
