What Are Runes?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Runes have a distinct significance in the course of European history.  They were a kind of alphabet that was used by ancient European tribes.  The initial runes were known as Danish and were found around the period of 3 or 4 A.D.  These alphabets were believed to have found their origin and inspiration from Greek and Italian originals.

The one country that produces a rich collection of runes remains is Britain.  Articles of domestic use and stone crosses have been found, around 50 in quantity that contain runes inscriptions.  For one, The Anglo-Saxons continued their use of runes for a period of five whole centuries.

Runes weren't the same everywhere.  They were arranged in staves or groups of letters ranging from a total of 16 to 30 characters.  They were believed to have a special connection with magic and spells, which was a misconception as runes were simple instruments, which helped in recording of facts and events.
