How To Care For An Amaryllis Plant?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

An amaryllis plant is basically a big bell shaped or Lilly like flowers are mostly found indoors as well as outdoors.

Amaryllis should be planted somewhere during the time of fall or winter. The best time to be considered is November. It should be planted in either a clay or plastic container and it is very essential to have holes at the bottom in order to drain out the water completely. They grow best in indoors and live well in a good lighted area. On an average they require four hours of sunlight every day. Fertilization is a very essential ingredient for the plants after they have grown up to a certain level. The soil should be slightly damp and fertilize with an unprejudiced houseplant fertilizer at standard intervals.

To get your amaryllis to bloom a second year you must cut off the dead flower stalk, continue to feed and water while it grows several long leaves.  Stop nurturing it after about 8 months.  (If your amaryllis was blooming for Christmas, stop watering at the end of August.)  Put the plant in a cool, dark place and totally neglect it for 6-8 weeks.  Cut off the dead leaves, report in fresh mix and start to water and feed again.  Amaryllis should bloom again in about six weeks but once in a while they need a year off.  Don't feel bad, try again next year!
