If my memory serves me correctly, I believe that the epidermis is the outer layer of skin and the dermis is just under the outer layer. It is sometimes referred to as the second layer of skin.

Tamarind is right. The dermis is located under the epidermis or outer layer of skin. It is thicker than the epidermis and contains the sweat and oil glands and the nerves that sense pressure and heat. It helps to act as a shock absorber for the body.
