Acrylic is a chemical compound. It is a compound which contains a functional group known as the acryl group. Acrylic is derived from acrylic acid. The structure of the functional group acryl is H2C=CH-C (=O)-. Compounds that contain an acryl group are known as acrylic compounds.
The typical acrylic compound is an alpha, beta-unsaturated carbonyl compound. It contains a double bond of carbon-carbon and a double bond of carbon-oxygen. The carbon-carbon double bond and the carbon-oxygen double bond are separated by a carbon-carbon single bond. It therefore has the characteristics of both the functional groups.
At the C=C double bond, the processes of electrophilic addition of acids and halogens, hydrogenation, hydroxylation and cleavage of the bond take place. At the C=O double bond, the process of nucleophilic substitution in case of esters or nucleophilic addition in case of ketones takes place. The carboxyl group pf acrylic acid reacts with ammonia, resulting in the formation of acrylamide. It also reacts with an alcohol to form an acrylate ester. The two double bonds are conjugated, since they are separated by a C-C single bond.
