    The Oriental Republic of Uruguay is a South American country. It is located in the southeastern part of South America. Uruguay was occupied mainly by the Charrua Indians. They occupied the territory before European settlement. In the year of 1516, Juan Diaz de Solis, the Spanish navigator sailed into the Rio de la Plata estuary. The Portuguese colony was established in the year of 1680. The Spanish also founded their colony in Montevideo in the year of 1726. The Portuguese was driven away by the Spanish from their settled territory in the same time. For the next fifty years Uruguay was a part of the Vice royalty of Rio De La Plata. Uruguay was staying as a Spanish colony till the early 19th century.

    Uruguay became independent from the Spanish rule in the year of 1811. The territory of Uruguay was re occupied by the Portuguese in the year of 1821. In the same year they incorporated the area into Brazil as a province. They revolted against Brazil in the year of 1825. In the year of 1828 it was come to know as an independent country. In the wars of Triple Alliance Uruguay fought against Paraguay. The other two powers of the Triple Alliance were Argentina and Brazil. The wars of triple Alliance were fought in the years of 1864 and 1865-1870.

    For the demand of raw materials during the Second World War (1938-45) and the Korean War (1950-53) the economics of Uruguay was profited a lot.

    A nine member's council replaced the office of the president. The office of the president of the Republic of Uruguay was closed down in the year of 1951. A new constitution was adopted by the country and the presidential system was restored in the year of 1966. In the year of 1973 the country was captured and ruled by the military government. The civilian rule was returned in the year of 1985. In the year of 1990, a general upturn of economy was followed in Uruguay.

    Now-a-days Uruguay is a two-housed legislative country. The head of the state as well as the government is called the president.
