Saint Nicholas church stands close to the Mersey River near the Pier Head in Liverpool. It is also known as the Sailors Church. Since St Nicholas is the patron saint of sailors, he is also regarded as the guardian of sailors.
The church has been rebuilt several times since the medieval days (1257 AD). There used to be a coffee house in the churchyard with shackles, where slaves used to be auctioned during the eighteenth century.
During the Civil War in England, with sieges and counter-sieges, it was used to detain prisoners by both the Kings and Cromwell's forces.
St Nicholas had links to slave trade, and prosperity from this, enabled the church to expand its churchyard.
In 1810, on a Sunday, the church's spire fell and 25 people were killed. Most were young girls under the age of 15.
