How Many Pups In First Litter?

Answer Question

3 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

It all depends on the breed (or mix breed) of the dog in question. Some breeds only have 2 to 3 pups, some other breeds 4 to 6, while other breeds have even larger litters.

A lot also depends on when the female was bred during her heat cycle and how many eggs were present. Later in the heat cycle typically results in a larger presence of eggs in the uterus to be fertilized. It also depends on the motility of the sperm - if they were not as active, that would account for less eggs being fertilized.

I bred one litter and wound up having to supplement bottle feeding for 13 pups. Too many pups, too much of a drain on mom.

    Good luck!

You can never know an exact number. Usually bigger dogs have bigger litters and smaller dogs usually have small litters. On the first litter they usually dont have too many. Although in big dogs that can mean up to 10 sometimes. Each litter they have they usually have more.
