What Is The Project For The New American Century?

The Project for the New American Century is a think-tank founded by right-wing American intellectuals dedicated to extending and prolonging America's dominance in world affairs. Founded in 1997, the organisation has been active in advocating increases in America's military expenditures and a policy of interventionism abroad. Many thinkers associated with the intellectual movement known as neo-conservatism have been members of the organisation and a large number joined the government of George W. Bush when it assumed office in 2001.

The think-tank became notorious for a document it issued in September 2000 entitled "Rebuilding America's Defences." Restating the organisation's firm support for militarist policies, it appeared to eerily presage the events of September 11 2001, and their ultimate consequences, when it observed "the process of transformation, even if it brings revolutionary change, is likely to be a long one absent some catastrophic and catalysing event – like a new Pearl Harbour."
