What Is The Language Of Moldova?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The official language of Moldova is Moldovan, but this is in fact virtually identical to Romanian. It is the Prut River that divides Moldova from Romania, but there is no actual difference in the speech of the people on either side of the river.

There are just some very minor variations between formal Moldovan and formal Romanian, and the question of whether they are actually two separate languages is a hotly contested issue that has political implications for the region.

As is found all over the world, there are some linguistic differences based upon different geographical areas, with different regions of Moldova and Romania having different accents and some differences in dialect and vocabulary. Moldovan has been more influenced by Russian than Rumanian in some of its more colloquial forms, due to significant Russian influence in the area. There are also more Slavic terms used in colloquial Moldovan than in colloquial Romanian.

Moldovan is one of the Eastern Romance languages, as is Romanian.
