The Union Nationale Rwandaise is abbreviated as the UNAR. It is translated into English as the Rwandan National Union. It is a former political party in the African nation of Rwanda. It is now defunct. The UNAR was founded in the month of September in the year 1959. The founder of the party was Prosper Bwanakweli. The UNAR had a strong supporter in Mwami Kigeli V Ndahindurwa, who ruled Rwanda for a period of two years, that is from 1959 to 1961. Mwami is the word for king in Rwanda.

Rwanda was still a Belgian colony at that point in time, and the UNAR was the leading party then. It enjoyed the support of the ruling monarchy. It called for independence to be declared in Rwanda with immediate effect. The monarchy in Rwanda was then a hereditary (Tutsi) constitutional form of monarchy. The UNAR won 16.8 per cent of the votes in the elections held in the year 1961.
