Who Is The Victoria Line On The London Underground System, Named After?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The Victoria Line on the London Underground system is named after Queen Victoria and also because trains run through the Rail Station of London Victoria.

The line opened in phases between 1968 and 197, when an official opening ceremony took place. Initially, it ran between Walthamstow in the north, to Highbury & Islington. This expanded down to Victoria and eventually Brixton in 1971. There were plans to call the line 'Walvic' which is an amalgamation of the 'Wal' from Walthamstow and 'Vic' from Victoria, but this was decided against.

The Victoria Line serves 16 stations and runs over 13.5 miles of track. All except one of the stations, Pimlico, has an interchange for another station, as it was built with the intention of freeing up congestion at busy stations.

Approximately 511,000 people use the Victoria Line on a weekday, with figures of around 161 million people using the line on an annual basis.
