Valletta is the capital of Malta. It is basically a seaport city. The city is situated on a rocky promontory and has harbors on the side. The city was named by the greatest knight of Malta; he was Jean Parisot de la Valetta. The city was built after the Greek siege, in the year of 1565. It checked the Ottoman adventure and also helped prevent them from capturing the southern part of Europe.

The city called Valletta became the capital of Malta in the year of 1570. It was the British principal base for the Mediterranean naval fleet from the year of 1814. The city of Valletta was also very important during the time of the Second World War. During the war the city suffered damage from heavy bombing raids.

Some medieval buildings of the 16th century are still found in the city. Trade and tourism are two sources of the city's economic base. According to the census report of the year 1999, the population was estimated at around 7,100.
