Who Is Antony Sher?

Antony Sher is an actor, author, novelist and painter, born in South Africa, he did his stint of national service in the South African Army in the Namib desert before realising his calling and auditioning for a number of London drama schools, he tried and failed to get into the Central School of Speech and Drama (a lesson to young actors in itself).  However, he was successful in getting into Webber Douglas (now a part of the Central School of Speech and Drama ironically!).  He went to perform for Gay Sweat Shop and other companies, before landing the major role of Richard III for the Royal Shakespeare Company - he published a book of his diary whilst working on the role, which is called The Year of the King.

Antony Sher and his partner, director Greg Doran are married under a civil ceremony.

He has written many books including Primo Time, Year of the King, Woza Shakespeare, Beside Myself.

Tony Sher is a KBE, which means he is a Knight of the British Empire, he is known as Sir Antony Sher.
