Why Do We Have To Learn English?

I personally believe that understanding the use, development and history of our native language enables us to better learn and understand other languages, and by extension, other cultures. In addition, many people speak English as their mother, and in fact, only tongue, yet are unable to diagram a sentence, recognize parts of speech, or compose a coherent sentence. It is equally valid to ask, why study geometry or other higher mathematics, if you will not choose a career path where these are prerequisites. The short answer to both questions is, becoming a more educated, well-rounded, fully functional, contributing member of society requires these basic skills.
