In Which Country Were The First Modern Olympic Games Held?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens, Greece in 1896; Greece was selected as the venue to commemorate the ancient Olympic Games held in the Greek city of Olympia from about the 7th century BC to the 3rd century AD.

The modern games owe their revival to the efforts of Baron Pierre de Coubertin a French aristocrat and teacher who helped in establishing the International Olympic Committee at Paris. Coubertin's main aim was to inculcate physical education in the youth by way of sports.

The number of countries that participated in the Athens Olympics in 1896 was 14 and the number of participating athletes was 241; women were not allowed to compete in the games. The sports included were athletics, cycling, fencing, gymnastics, shooting, swimming, tennis, weightlifting and wrestling. The United States (11) won the maximum number of gold medals while Greece (46) won the maximum number of overall medals.
