Other Than The Bible, What Book Has Made A Change In Your Life?

Answer Question

Yes, the Bible, absolutely. I could rattle off many, many books. I'm not exactly sure what you're looking for but since it's in the "society & politics/people" category i'll put one out there that has changed how i look at a certain person in history. About two months ago i was in my local bookseller looking for something i could really sink my teeth into. I only read nonfiction so i cruised through several sections and wound up in history. I came across a book called "A Psychopathic God: Adolf Hitler". First, let me say that quite a few people I've talked with in the past have reacted to his name with anger, disgust, hatred, among others. And my knowledge of him was limited. Judging by those people's knowledge (or lack) of him I gathered that their reactions were somewhat unfounded. This book was unique in that it was an in-depth psychological profile of Hitler. Reading nonfiction has taught me an important lesson - because recorded history is based not so much on what actually happened as it is on the actors and recorders perceptions of how it happened, i learned that i have to read with as much objectivity as i can. Out of fairness to myself. When i finished it i had a completely unique insight into the man. It changed me. The next book i chose was "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich". Makes me wonder how i would have taken it had i read it first. Don't get me wrong - yes, absolutely, Hitler committed atrocities against humanity. The Jews, Poles, his own countrymen, and so many others. So did Mao, Stalin, Pol Pot, to name a few more. The book helped reinforce my feelings about one thing that's missing in the way others think - we tend to hate the person instead of the persons actions or words. "I hate people who..." I don't hate racists, i don't hate people who cut in front of me when i'm driving, and i don't hate Hitler or Mao or Stalin. I get angry when i think about what they did. I am angry that racism exists. Bottom line about the book is that it changed my thoughts about how i separate the person and their actions.
