How Do I Fix A Thermostat?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

It is not difficult to fix a thermostat. Firstly you will need to remove the cover of the thermostat. If your thermostat is mechanical then you must ensure that the mercury switches (that is the little vial that is full of a silvery liquid or mercury) are level. You will now need to find what is known as a heat anticipator. It is usually a smallish lever on a calibrated scale. It is often marked 'longer' so you should not have much trouble finding it.

Next you will need to adjust the heat anticipator a mark closer to the 'longer' setting especially if the air conditioning or the furnace goes on or off too frequently. Carefully move the lever away from the 'longer' setting particularly if you want the air conditioner or furnace to start up more. Now wait until the thermostat stabilizes with the new setting. Repeat the process if required. If this doesn't work then it is best to replace the thermostat.
