How Did The English Civil War Affect Parish Registers?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The civil war in England began on 22 August 1642 and ended with the execution of King Charles 1 on January 30 1649. Then followed the interregnum period until the restoration of Charles II in 1660-1661.

Many early parish registers record the disturbances of the civil war and after 1649, many parish registers become fragmented as a system of civil registration was introduced. Many clergy were ejected from their churches by the strong Puritan movement and in 1645, the Book of Common Prayer was abolished.

When Oliver Cromwell took charge of England in 1653, the clergy suffered further. An Act became law on 29 September 1653 that took the registers from church ministers and instead appointed civil officials called Parish Registers to be responsible for keeping records.

The Parish Registers made efforts to record births , civil marriages and deaths but many did a half-hearted job. The system of parish registers began again after the civil war, and the records from the interregnum are often lost.
