Doxycycline is a man-made antibiotic obtained from tetracycline.  Doxycycline is helpful to fight a wide range of bacteria like Chlamdiya psittaci, Neisseria gonorrhoea, Hemophilus influenzae, Mycoplasma pneumoniae etc. This synthetic antibiotic is sold under the brand-name 'Vibramycin.'

It is available in the form of capsules, tablets, suspension and syrup; and is sold under prescription.  Doctors are known to prescribe doxycycline for the treatment of typhus, cholera, anthrax, acne, syphilis, respiratory tract infections and urethritis. The medicine can be taken along with meals. Doctors recommend taking the medication once or twice a day for a period of 7-14 days. Doxycycline is not recommended for pregnancy cases unless there is no other suitable antibiotic. For women who are lactating too, the prescription of tetracyclines is to be taken only under strict medical advice because doxycycline which is known to be secreted into the breast milk can cause the bones to lose their density
