Should A Horse Wear A Blanket In The Summer?

Answer Question

3 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

Well my horses only wear their blankets in the winter when it is really cold, but i have seen people put them on in the summer too. I think putting it on in the summer is a dumb idea, cause they would get too hot. Some people put them on in the summer because they want them to shed their winter fur faster, but i dont know for sure when you want to put them on, you'll have to decide yourself.

Net maybe to help keep flys away, a blanket would only make the horse dehydrated

A horse's ideal outdoor temperature is somewhere around 50 degrees Fahrenheit, whereas we are more comfortable at around 70 or 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Don't forget they wear a coat all year- their hair. So some people choose to blanket only when the temperature is below 50 degrees, others blanket if it rains (if your horse gets wet it won't be able to keep warm as well) and some blanket year round to keep their horses hair short for show purposes. It is all a matter of opinion.
