Spontaneous human combustion is when a body burns without any identifiable means of external source of ignition - or in other words, you go just up in smoke!
There is much speculation about whether people have actually spontaniously combusted and as yet, it is not a proven occurance.
Many theories exist about how and why people have seeminly burnt without any source of fire being near them. In 1731, an account was published about a woman known as the Countess Cornelia di Bandi whose remains were found burned on the flloor in her bedroom. The only things that remained were her legs and part of her head.
To this day, no one can explain how this and other cases happened.
However, one explanation by scientists is that of the Wick Effect. Scientists who have studied this have come up with the theory that a victim of SHC, was already dead prior to burning - perhaps of a heart attack or similar - and with the aid of a still lit cigarette or being near an open fire, the fat inside the body acts as a wick does in a candle and simply melts away the body.
Either way, not a nice way to die!
