Perth is the capital of the state of Western Australia in Australia. Perth covers a total area of 5, 386 square kilometres. According to the 2005 Australian population census figures, Perth, which is home to more than three-fourths of the population of the state of Western Australia, was inhabited by 1, 477, 800 people. It is the fourth largest city in Australia in terms of population-wise rankings. The metropolitan area of Perth is located to the southwest of the island continent. It lies between the Indian Ocean and a low escarpment known as the Darling Range which is situated along the western coast of Australia.

The central business district and suburbs of the Western Australian capital are situated on the banks of the Swan River. The summers in Perth are hot and dry and the winter season is mild, with temperatures seldom going below the double figure mark. The famous sea breeze that blows across Perth and lowers its temperature is known as the Fremantle Doctor.
