Why Was My Local Chinese Takeaway Closed All Week?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Your local Chinese takeaway is almost certainly closed for the Chinese New Year celebrations which culminate on February 18. Many takeaway owners and their families observe this holiday and often like to go to Hong Kong for the two week festivities or go visiting other Chinese families in the UK.

This year is the Year of the Boar. Alternatively, known as the Spring Festival, Chinese New Year is the most important date in the Chinese calendar.

It is also said that the Chinese New Year celebrations each year cause the largest human migration as it is traditional for Chinese families to make a big effort to get together and have a reunion dinner, no matter where they happen to be on the globe.

The date of the Chinese New Year varies from late January to mid February as the date is plotted as the first day of the first lunar month
