Cambridge United Football Club was founded in 1912, although their original name was Abbey United. Abbey relates to the area of Cambridge, from which the club originates.
The side was originally involved in amateur leagues, but achieved professional status in 1949 and began to call themselves Cambridge United from 1951.
As a professional side, the club began playing in the Eastern Counties League, before being promoted to the Southern League in the 1957/58 season. After winning the Southern Division championship for two seasons in a row, Cambridge United were elected to join the Football League in 1970.
Their highest finish in the Football League table was in the 1992/93 season when they came 23rd in Division Two. Unfortunately this relegated them back to Division Three.
The club has reached the sixth round of the FA cup on two occasions.
Cambridge United play their home games at the Abbey Stadium which has a capacity for just over 9,600 people.
In the 2005/06 season, the club finished in 12th place in the Conference table.
