Who Do I Need To Notify That I've Started Up My Own Home Business?

This depends on the nature of your business, but for most people the main ones to worry about are the Inland Revenue, Companies House, Customs and Excise.

If, say, you intend converting a garage into a workshop you would be well advised to contact the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). Some businesses are required to register by law.

Again, some businesses may need to register with their local authority and apply for a licence to operate, e.g. taxi operators, food outlets etc. If you need to alter your home to accommodate your business, you should also consult with your local authority on whether you need planning permission because of change of use. A home office is very unlikely to require any planning consent.

Start up companies planning to employ staff should also contact an insurance broker for advice on employers' liability insurance.

Also speak to your home insurance company about your plans to ensure your policy allows for a home office and offers enough cover.
