What Is The Best Way To Handle A Panic Attack (or Mental Breakdown)?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Well for a mental breakdown, you need a doctor right away. A panic attack is something that can be managed if you get some help with it. You will most likely need medication for it, but you can learn how to control them and even get rid of them. It also depends on the severity of the panic attacks.
Stop what you are doing, start to breath slow and deep. Tense up some muscles, and keep breathing, then relax the muscles. Many times when people are experiencing this, they might think that they are having a heart attack or something is wrong with them. Keep the breathing and the relaxing up and reassure yourself that you are not going to die, and then after a while you will start to feel it passing. Hope this helps, good luck to you.

Well thank you for input =]

I actually did seek counseling first, I'm trying to avoid relying on a pill for moral reasons, but I'll see how much this helps.

It's weird because when I get "trapped" in a group of people or a small room I start to tense up, hyperventilate, and cry. It's a scary feeling and sometimes people think it's funny because they don't understand it.

I do have to say that your response will be most helpful. I appreciate it very much =]

I know what you are going through. I suffer with this too. I can't stand to be around people, and I have panic and anxiety all the time, as well as agoraphobia, which means I don't leave the house unless I absolutely have to. I am afraid of people, I am afraid of buses, and semis and all kinds of things. There isn't a day when i don't have an attack. I do get medical help for this, and it helps some, but I still have to mentally prepare myself to leave my home.
