What Is Panic Disorder And How Can It Be Treated?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Panic Disorder is a mental illness marked by repeated, unexpected panic attacks and continual anxiety about the possibility of panic attacks. A panic attack is a period of intense fear, worry, or discomfort and usually occurs without warning. Symptoms include a rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath, trembling, choking or suffocating sensations, and fear of dying from a heart attack.

A panic attack can be of a few seconds as well as several hours. Such attacks are more frequent in women than in men. People suffering from panic disorder may experience panic attacks frequently, sometimes daily and at other times weekly. Most people with panic disorder develop agoraphobia, a fear of being in places from where escape or rescue seem difficult if a panic attack occurs. Therefore, they avoid going to public places and prefer to stay at home. They also have a tendency for depression and suicide.

Experts say people who are vulnerable to stress and anxiety are at risk of experiencing panic attacks. Health professionals usually treat people with panic disorder with medications, psychotherapy or a combination of both.
