Skeleton is of two types i.e. exoskeleton and endoskeleton. When the hard skeleton encloses the softer body part and provides surface for attachments of muscles. It is called exoskeleton. Among the invertebrates, mollusks, arthropods and echinoderms possess an exoskeleton. In arthropods such as the insects, the exoskeleton is made up of a substance called chitin. The exoskeleton of arthropods consists of jointed pieces, which provide necessary flexibility for movements. Many vertebrates too are protected by an exoskeleton.
Vertebrates including the humans have an internal skeleton called endoskeleton. The skin and muscles form the external covering of the skeletal framework.
The muscles attachments to the skeletal parts are such that the various pieces of the skeleton are held together. The muscles and the skeleton thus together provide support to the body, maintain body shape and allow movements. The skeleton of the vertebrates contains of either cartilage or bone or both. Cartilage is flexible and less hard than bone. Bone is the hardest connective tissue. Both contain cells which produce fibers and a ground substance in which the cells and the fibers are embedded. The ground substance is the cartilage consists of protein material. In the bone it is rich in calcium phosphate and other salts.
