Does Everyone Like Hydrangeas?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

NO, I hate hydrangeas.  Although,I am mellowing a bit.  I used to profoundly hate them and now I think that they are just about tolerable.

They are hardy and low-maintenance.  The do produce nice large colourful flowers that last for a long time.  They aren't particularly preyed upon by any pests in a temperate climate.

They are easy enough to pull out of the ground if you really can't stand them. and they can be savagely trimmed back each year and will keep coming back.  Plus, different varieties can handle a large range of conditions: hot to freezing, sunny to shady, dry to very wet.  Not a lot of plants are so versatile and tolerant.  This is pretty excellent going in the plant and flower world.

But you can't get away from the fundamental fact that the flowers look exactly like old ladies' shower caps.  And they are favourite landscaping plants (because of the low maintenance issues)  of grumpy little old ladies.   The sort of old biddies who used to scold me for sneaking into their yards to retrieve balls when I was a child.

So I think that I will persist in sneering and frowning at hydrangeas, for a few decades longer, at least until I'm an old biddy myself.
