The totality of items include in balance of payment current account is follows. This includes all items of income and outlay, imports and exports of goods and services, investment income, and transfer payments. The current account balance is akin to the net income of a nation. It is conceptually similar to net exports in the national output accounts.

In the past, many writers concentrated on the trade balance, which consists ofmerchandise imports and exports. It consists mainly of primary commodities and manufactured goods. In an earlier era, the mercantilists strove for a trade surplus calling this a favorable balance of trade. They hoped to void an unfavorable trade balance, by which they meant a trade deficit. This point of view has carried over to today s many nations seek trade surpluses.

Today economists avoid this language because a trade deficit is not necessarily harmful. Sometimes, a nation may have a trade deficit because the domestic productivity of capital is extremely high and borrowing to import capital equipment will in the long run raise national income.
