When we sweat our body secretes a natural cooling layer of liquid on the skin so that we don't overheat. When we shiver the process is the opposite. When the body drops to an uncomfortable temperature level, the body automatically triggers a reaction ~ in this case, shivering. Muscles begin to shake in the body in an attempt to make the body warm up. When someone has a fever, although their temperature might well be high, they will also shiver because despite feeling hot, their body is actually in a hypothermic state and the natural reaction from the body is to counteract this by shivering. When we develop a cold, the cold virus makes our temperature drop, which is why we often shiver even if we are in a warm environment. The best option to stop shivering is to do as your mother told you to and put extra layers of clothes on. This will quickly warm the body up and the shivering will stop.
