Numerous villages lay claim to the title of 'largest village', in England. The title is however quite meaningless, as verification of the same is next to impossible, given the vague definitions for village, and the absence of specific benefits associated with the status, along with the vagueness of the adjective.
The claim is made extremely complicated because there is no agreement over what constitutes a village. The definition could refer to a variety of factors like are, population, key building, or a minimum number of houses.
Some of the places that have laid claim to the title of largest village in England include Ashington, in Northumberland, with a population of 28,000. Ashington was regarded as the largest coal mining village in the world, during the hay days of coal mining. Other places that claim to be the largest are Anston in South Yorkshire, Barnt Green in Worcestershire, Bayston Hill in Shropshire, and Bembridge on the Isle of Wight, which also claims to be one of Europe's largest villages.
