Has The Nuclear Treaty Between India And America Been Signed Or Not, And What Are Its Results?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

India and the United States of America entered into a strategic partnership in the year 2005. As a part of their agreement, Dr Manmohan Singh (the prime minister of India) and George W. Bush (the president of the United States of America) broke the policy which did not recognise India as a legitimate member of the nuclear club.

This ended New Delhi's three-decade-long quest for this type of recognition, despite the opponents' claims that the India deal would land a severe blow to the international non-proliferation regime. They believe that Iran, North Korea and other countries which aspire to be nuclear powers could be inspired by the India deal.

The detractors of the India deal are both right and wrong. The critics rightly say that the deal is unbalanced and has been signed without taking into account its long-term implications, but the damage it will do to non-proliferation has been exaggerated.
