Look in the phone book for "Urgent Care Clinics" or "Walk-In Clinics." These clinics are only for minor emergency care, not for complex, serious or long-term medical conditions. For example, if you are working in your backyard and find yourself covered in poison ivy, you need some timely medical care because this condition is very painful. You could go to a hospital emergency room, but you're going to end up sitting there for a long time while more urgent, even life-threatening conditions are treated first; this is called "medical triage," it means that in the ER, the sickest person gets the first treatment. But if you go to a walk-in clinic for this condition, you will be treated much faster since your condition isn't serious or life-threatening.
Severe colds, the flu, minor burns and injuries, migraine headaches, etc are typical conditions seen in Urgent Care Clinics. If the physician on duty believes you need more serious care, you will be taken to an ER for assessment and critical care.
