    Odo of Chatillon-sur-Marne was the man who called for the first crusade at the council of Clermont. The council of Clermont was held in the year of 1095. He called for the crusade in response to the appeal of Alexius I Commenus.

    Odo of Chatillon-sur-Marne was famous in the name of Urban II. He was born in the year of 1035 in Chatillon-sur-Marne in Champagne in France. He became the pope in the year of 1088 and stayed as the pope still the year of 1099.

    Urban II was selected as cardinal of a Cluniac monastry. Pope Gregory VII made him the cardinal. He further reformed Gregory's principle. After becoming the pope in the year of 1088, he protected his authority against the antipope Clement III. Urban II also strengthened the position of the papacy in the reform movement.

    He called for the first crusade in 1095 and endorsed the union of the eastern and western churches. Urban II also held up the Christian re-conquest of Spain from the Moors.

    Urban II, the pope was died on 29th of July in 1099 on Rome.
