A Chihauhau is a nice little pet.  But they are very hyper and bark a lot.
A Boston Terrier is a great pet.  They are very loyal and sweet.  Their only downside is that they snore.   They are also prone to having seizures.  A miniature Doberman Pinscher (sometimes referred to as min-pin) is a fantastic pet, loyal and no downside that I can think of.  I have owned all three.  The Chihauhau Elvis, jumped out of my car and ran right in front of a moving vehicle in a matter of seconds.  The Boston Terrier, Daisy, got kicked by a cow when she was trying to get one of her puppies out of the pasture.  I still have the Miniature Doberman, Achilles,  and I think he is perfect.

I think you want a miniature Schnauzer, or one of the Schnauzer mixes.  Schnauzers barely shed, they do need grooming though, every other month is what mine gets.  She is a perfect companion and just about my best friend.  She is an excellent watch dog, but quickly learned to know who was coming by their walk.  She never barks at the mailman or anyone who comes on a very regular basis.  She is a snuggle bunny when I want her to be, yet can stay alone without throwing a snit fit.  She was very easy to housebreak.  If you get a Schnoodle (Schnauzer/Poodle cross) they are cute as the dickens and hypo allergic.  Really smart too, but not strong enough to open the fridge!  And best of all, many are available very reasonably on www.PetFinder.com.  Please consider an adult dog, they need homes so badly and all the puppy problems are over.  They are ready for immediate love and fun!
