ProActive (TV commercial) works, but it's VERY expensive to stay on it.  They do offer a promotional price for first time buyers if you want to try it.
Like the previous response says, a dermatologist can prescribe medications but most are conservative about writing prescriptions and I'm not sure of the side effects.

There are many acne healing medicines present in the market. But the doctors advice proactive solution as a good acne medicine and for more information about acne heal, take a look of this site.

Over the counter treatments often don't work well.
Go to your doctor and get a recommendation for a skin doctor near you. They can prescribe good treatments for you that WORK.
Benzaclin is a good treatment. Clindamycin also works.
      Hope that helped

If you can't find anything over the counter, your doctor can prescribe Retin-A. My son uses it but you can't stay out in the sun for long periods of time, i.e. Don't lay out after putting it on. It's also good for scars and I use around my eyes for lines!  It's strong so be careful if you do use it.

My children used neosporin in addition, of course, to keeping the face absolutely clean - that is, no make-up!

I had 2 children who had problems with acne. What works for one person, doesn't always work for another. One child tried Acne Free, an over the counter kit sold at Walmart and it dried out her skin something awful. That child changed to Proactive, a similar kit, sold on the internet and in magazine ads and it worked fine. It costs about twice as much as Acne Free.  My other child used Acne Free with no problems and continues to use it.

A dermatologist friend once told me to:
             1. Wash with a salicylic acid wash
             2. Apply a glycolic acid cream(Alpha Hydroxy) to the entire face and other problem areas
             3. Finally use 10% benzoyl peroxide directly on breakouts.
          Do daily.

Available at Walgreens; a few bucks; no prescription . Works as well as TV remedies for a lot less money.

There is one over the counter acne solution that I found is great! (I'm 33 & have struggled with acne my whole life!)  You wouldn't believe it if you saw it on the shelf, its actually called "BYE BYE BLEMISH" - the drying lotion! Its surfer which is proven to get rid of the big blemishes quick! I've put it on my trouble areas every night before bed! I'm usually rid of the eye sore blemishes in one to two days! & it the amount of bad ones down!

I have had acne since i was about 11, and I am now 20, I recently got this new laser treatment called ELOS acne head followed by chemical peels to get rid of the scarring and they have all worked greatly. I am completely sick of acne and have had it almost my whole life, so I was willing to try anything. The laser helps to rid the skin of bacteria underneath and my acne is pretty much under control except for a few here and there. The laser is about $75 a treatment and I received 4. I get peels done every 4 months and they're from 175-300 dollars. But if you are really serious about getting rid of acne I think this is a good way to go because I have spent thousands of dollars on all other products and dermatologist visits and this has really worked for me. If you don't have bad scarring you prob. Wouldn't even need but 2 chemical peels, but I get them every 4 months just for maintenance of my skin. There is no down time for the peels, your skin is red then peels for about 7 days, and i went to school right after the laser because there are no effects from the laser. It really has made me a much more confident person because acne sure can take confidence away. Also drinking plenty of water and washing the face EVERY night i noticed has helped.
