If you want to add or subtract two fractions with different denominators you must make each fraction have the same demoniator(common denominator) to do this you multiply. For ex

    1/2+2/3=
    common denominator is 6
for 1/2 multiply the numerater and denominator by 3 to get 3/6
for 2/3 multiple the top and bottom by 2 to get 4/6
    3/6+4/6=7/6
    7/6 is the same as 1 1/6
