In chemistry and physics, the atomic number (also known as the proton number) is the number of protons found in the nucleus of an atom. It is conventionally represented by the symbol Z. The atomic number uniquely identifies a chemical element. In an atom of neutral charge, atomic number is equal to the number of electrons.
The atomic number Z should not be confused with the mass number A, which is the total number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom.

Atoms have tree sub-particles namely electron, proton and neutron. Atomic number of an element is the number of electrons and protons present in the atom of that element. Remember that proton no. And neutron no. Are always same in an atom but not in an ion. For example, atomic number of Carbon is 6. Elements can be distinguished by their atomic numbers

Atomic number is the number that both your proton and neutron is added up till.. Both of these are in the center of the atom.

Atomic number is not the total number of protons and neutrons collectively. It is the no. of proton and electrons present in that atom.
