If you are buying a pen refill offline, the easiest method is to simply take the pen along with you to the shop.

Buying on the web, though, you will need to know the following:

• the brand name and model of your pen
• is it a ballpoint or fountain pen?
• any markings, trade names or serial numbers stamped on the refill
• the length of the refill cartridge.

When removing the ink cartridge, take a note of the removal procedure and be careful not to lose any of the components. Make sure you put this note and details of trade names, serial numbers somewhere safe, preferably somewhere you'll remember later, then dispose of the spent ink cartridge properly.
