The main reason for the outbreak of the Vietnam War was the failure of the Vietnamese nationalists to attain total control of southern Vietnam. The supporting countries for the Vietnamese communists included the Peoples Republic of China and the Soviet Union (Russia). Whereas the allies for the South Vietnam were New Zealand, Republic of Korea, Thailand, Philippines, United States of America and Australia.
This was a very brutal war which resulted in many deaths in Vietnam. Even the countries that were supporting the war lost many men to it. However the final result of the war was a peace treaty signed in 1973 stating that the US army move out of Vietnam. The end of the war ultimately resulted in the re-unification of Vietnam.
The sum total of this is that there was no "Pearl Harbor" moment to "begin" the Vietnam War. Like most history, the beginnings are imprecise, messy, and often do not look like a beginning at the time they happen.

Actually the background of the world was as such that the Vietcong, which was the South Vietnamese Communist side fought a guerilla war against the anti-communist forces of the region. The United States entered the war to prevent communist takeover of South Vietnam so they sided with North Vietnam.
The North Vietnamese Army fought a conventional war with the support of the U.S military. The result of the war was Communist takeover of South Vietnam and Khmer Rouge takeover of Cambodia. It also unified North and South Vietnam.
