What Year Did The Vietnam War Start?

Answer Question

23 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

The Vietnam War started in the year 1959. The Vietnamese War was one of the most brutal battles ever fought. It lasted for a period of 16 years. It exact date on which ceasefire was called was 30th of April 1959. The war was fought between DRV (Democratic Republic of Vietnam) and the 'Republic of Vietnam.' United States of America had allied with the Republic of Vietnam to fight the Vietnam War.

The main reason for the outbreak of the Vietnam War was the failure of the Vietnamese nationalists to attain total control of southern Vietnam. The supporting countries for the Vietnamese communists included the Peoples Republic of China and the Soviet Union (Russia). Whereas the allies for the South Vietnam were New Zealand, Republic of Korea, Thailand, Philippines, United States of America and Australia.

This was a very brutal war which resulted in many deaths in Vietnam. Even the countries that were supporting the war lost many men to it. However the final result of the war was a peace treaty signed in 1973 stating that the US army move out of Vietnam. The end of the war ultimately resulted in the re-unification of Vietnam.

The war did not start in 1959 or that it was a 16 year war. The war was from 1945-1975. 1959 was the year of America's involvement.

The war may of started in 45. But for the americans it did not start until 59. The war did not end in 73, until the return of the pow's in 75 came home. And then u ask any vietnam veteran they will tell u for them the war will never be over until the last american soldier comes home alive or dead, then to them they will have closure in their lives. Those are the words that came out of my father's mouth a vietnam vet and many of his fellow battle buddies. It is still going strong in their heads.

First, it depends on how you define your terms.  The Vietnamese fought Japanese occupation from 1940 until 1945, largely under HoChih Minh.  Minh was actually under the employ of the OSS during the Japanese occupation.  After 1945, Vietnam more or less (the details are complicated) reverted to a French colony.  Only problem was that Vietnam did not want to be a colony.  The French faced increasing opposition, ultimately facing armed resistance by 1950 (the year many are pointing out here).  The French Army fought a resistance movement called the Vietminh, and lost a major battle to the Vietminh at Dienbienphu in 1954.  The French, capitalizing on Ho Chih Minh's communism and the Truman Doctrine, requested US assistance.  Ultimately, an accord was reached to have country wide elections, but the US ultimately urged the South Vietnamese leadership (Ho's base of power was in the north) and conservative elements in the French supported and created Army of the Republic of Vietnam to back out of the agreement.  As a result, by the late 1950's, South Vietnam was ruled by an unpopular president (Diem) and was drawing in more and more US troops as advisers.  In 1963, Diem was assassinated by military leaders (US officials were aware of the plot, but stood by and did nothing) in a coup, leaving South Vietnam being ruled by a military oligarchy throughout much of the 1960's.  Increasingly, this oligarchy requested more and more aid from a US who was concerned about Mao's takeover in China in 1949 and the Korean War cease fire of 1954.

The sum total of this is that there was no "Pearl Harbor" moment to "begin" the Vietnam War.  Like most history, the beginnings are imprecise, messy, and often do not look like a beginning at the time they happen.

The Vietnam war started in the year 1959 and ended on April 30, 1975. The location of the war was Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. This war resulted in North Vietnamese Victory and Communist takeover of South Vietnam and Laos.

Actually the background of the world was as such that the Vietcong, which was the South Vietnamese Communist side fought a guerilla war against the anti-communist forces of the region. The United States entered the war to prevent communist takeover of South Vietnam so they sided with North Vietnam.

The North Vietnamese Army fought a conventional war with the support of the U.S military. The result of the war was Communist takeover of South Vietnam and Khmer Rouge takeover of Cambodia. It also unified North and South Vietnam.

The involvement of the US began in 1965 until our withdrawal in 1973, but the war ended in1975 after the containment of Saigon (in South Vietnam) by North Vietnam when the South Vietnamese surrendered.
