Mr. Poe informs the Baudelaires that it is now possible to have an entire village be our guardian. The children select the village V.F.D. they believe that at this village they may find their friends the Quagmires. At the village they are informed that it is their duty to do the entire village work every morning. The children are then taken to Hector who promises to take care of their food and clothing.

This book however contains lots of poem and couplets that are found on a tree before dawn which are clues from the Quagmires. They are also informed that the Count Olaf has been captured. The kids on seeing Jacques Snicket realize that he is not the count but detective Dupin is the Count Olaf who is investigating the crime, while the head of the police in that town is truly the disguised Esme, Olaf's partner in crime.

Jacques Snicket is found dead and the detective points his finger at the kids who are then sent to prison. The kids escape and finally put all their clues together and discover the hiding spot where Olaf has hid the Quagmires.

The book ends with again all these friends splitting up. The Count's Identity is revealed and the children escaping the mob who still believe that the children are criminals.
