Does Anyone Know About Live-work Communities?

I am looking for more information on live-work communities in New York. I am a college student having trouble finding work and need an affordable place to live. Anyone whom has any information would be greatly appreciated.

Contact the University of Massuchusetts at Amherst, along US Route 91, north of Springfield and about halfway to the Vermont border. Twenty years ago with many faculty members working on this idea, this concept was explored especially with Co-Housing where multi-generational apartments connect to large common areas with communal food preparation kitchen and dining options.

There were years ago "Utopian" communities fostered by individual manufacturer's with strong beliefs that a complete functional 'village-like' developments could produce more economically as well as a better quality
    of life.

Look also to the oldies but not enduring Shaker communities started by Mother Anna Lee at Watervliet, New York (Albany) and branched into New England and west to Ohio.

During the 1900's to World War II, India and China concentrated on home industries which relied on families to work on producing just above crude manufacturing products, called "cottage industries".

You will find the low points too, when you read up on Company Coal Mining towns complete with company stores and eventually "Bloody Ludlow" on April 19th!
