Was Gulf War 1 The Last Time The One Tonne 101 Saw Combat With The British Army?

Answer Question

When the British Army's ageing fleet of 101s were sent to the Gulf in 1991 to help liberate Kuwait from Iraqi invasion, it was expected that it was the old war horse's last hurrah. By the time of the 1991 Gulf War the newest examples of the versatile V8 powered 101 were 13 years old, the oldest 101s then in service were 16 years old.

But due to hold ups in sourcing replacements, the 101s gained a reprieve and a few years later saw action again when they were sent to the Balkans. The last of the 101s were finally pensioned off around 1997 or so.

The Land Rover 101 first entered production in 1975 in response to the need for an all terrain vehicle to tow the new 105mm Light Gun. There was a three year production run of the 101, the last coming off the assembly line in 1978.
