Not hard to do but requires you to use some thought. You have to remember who they are (screen name) and find where you met them (what question or debate they have open). Once yuo find them, click their screen name and request to be their friend (again) and explain to them in their shout box what happened.

I assume you are speaking of your computers address book or friends list. If you don't have a back-up or another computer with this information it will be let your fingers do the typing! Depending on where this information was kept, some programs do auto archiving, you may be able to retrieve them through this means or by reviewing your old mail and messages, it beats retyping but it is still a task that isn't all that fun!
