Do Camp Staff Receive Free Time At Residential Summer Camps?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

All camp staff receive some free time at residential summer camps, but the precise amount of time will depend greatly on the specific position and on the camp. People working in summer camps, however, must remember that they are working in a rather demanding environment and are not on vacation.

Most counsellors and activity leaders will enjoy the bulk of their free time once the campers have been put to bed and are asleep. This will usually be after about 9:00pm in most camps. Staff are then free to go swimming, walking, meet with each others or enjoy other activities on camp grounds until curfew, which is often set at around 11:30pm.

Many residential camps also arrange for staff to have one day off each week. This is especially the case in the US and Canada where a session at camps normally lasts for two weeks. Some camps also give each staff member one night off during each session where they are permitted to leave camp grounds and visit a nearby town, in order to go for a dinner with a small group of other staff members.
