The Nevada del Ruiz is the highest Columbian volcano with historical activity and is located in the Andes Mountains of South America. It is a broad, glacier covered active strato-volcano with a summit elevation of 5389m. Surprisingly the volcano is covered with 25sq.km of snow even though it is located only 500km from the Earth's equator.

The locals in the towns around it have named the volcano, "the sleeping lion". An eruption in November 1985 killed more than 23000 people from nearby towns and villages and swept down four river drainages. Considered as the second largest volcano related disaster of the 20 th century, this eruption in Armero was truly one of the worst seen by mankind. Its eruptions can be traced back to 1595 after which it erupted in 1845. It remained quiet for 140 years before erupting again in 1985, the worst eruption ever.
